Travelling abroad with your pet requires careful planning and the correct documentation to help ensure a smooth journey. At Filey Vets, we understand how important it is to prepare your pet for travel, whether you are taking them overseas or bringing them into the UK. Our veterinary team can provide guidance on pet travel health requirements and help you understand the steps involved in preparing your pet for international travel.

Pet Travel Documentation

Pet travel requirements depend on your destination, the country you are travelling from, your mode of transport and your pet’s circumstances. Depending on the journey, your pet may need appropriate identification, vaccination records, a microchip and specific travel documentation, such as an animal health certificate or other relevant certificates.

Our team can discuss your travel plans and advise you on the veterinary requirements you should check before travelling. It is important to start preparing well in advance, as some requirements involve waiting periods or must be completed within specific timeframes.

What to consider before travelling with your pet

Importing and Exporting Pets

Taking a pet abroad or bringing one into the UK involves following the applicable animal health and travel regulations. Requirements can differ depending on the countries involved, so it is important to establish what documentation, vaccinations, treatments and checks may be necessary for your particular journey.

Our veterinary team can help you understand the veterinary aspects of travel preparation and identify the requirements you need to confirm with the relevant authorities. Planning ahead can help reduce last-minute complications and ensure you have time to organise the appropriate documentation before travelling.

Pet travel preparation may involve:

Travelling from the UK

Pets travelling from Great Britain to another country may need specific identification, vaccination records and travel documentation depending on the destination and current regulations.

Bringing a Pet into the UK

Pets entering Great Britain must meet the applicable entry requirements. These may include approved identification, vaccination or treatment requirements and the correct travel documents, depending on the country of origin.

Vaccinations and Health Requirements

Some destinations require particular vaccinations, parasite treatments or health checks before travel. The requirements and timing depend on the destination and the applicable regulations.

Travel Documentation

The documents required for your journey depend on the countries involved and the type of travel. Confirming the correct documentation in advance can help you avoid delays or problems during your trip.
