Microchipping

Microchipping is a simple and effective way to help identify your pet if they become lost. A microchip contains a unique identification number that can be read using a scanner and linked to your contact details through a microchip database. At Filey Vets, we can advise you on microchipping and help you understand how to keep your pet’s identification details up to date.

Pet Microchipping

Microchipping provides your pet with a permanent form of identification. The microchip is a tiny device placed under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The procedure is quick and is similar to a routine injection for most pets.

If your pet is found and taken to a veterinary practice or another authorised organisation, their microchip can be scanned to help identify them. It is important to remember that a microchip does not track your pet’s location, and your contact details must remain up to date on the relevant database.

What to expect during microchipping

Keeping Your Pet’s Identification Up to Date

Microchipping is most effective when the registered information is accurate. If you move house, change your telephone number or transfer ownership of your pet, you should update the details with the relevant microchip database.

Keeping your information current makes it easier for you to be contacted if your pet is found. If you are unsure whether your pet has been microchipped or which database holds their details, our team can advise you on the next steps.

Microchipping may be recommended for:

Puppies and Kittens

Microchipping can help establish permanent identification from an early age. We can advise you on appropriate timing and any applicable legal requirements.

Dogs and Cats

A microchip provides an additional way to identify your pet if they become lost or separated from you.

Newly Adopted Pets

If you have recently adopted a pet, it is worth checking whether they already have a microchip and ensuring the registered details are correct.

Pets with Changed Owner Details

If your address, telephone number or ownership details have changed, updating the microchip database helps keep your pet’s identification information accurate.
