We’re Filey’s Vets – and we take our community responsibility seriously.
Each November we ask the team to nominate a local charity: a practice vote is taken and the two charities with the most votes get a donation of £1000 each – a tradition running every year since Lauren bought the practice.
It’s taken the team’s donations to Active Filey, Acorn Rabbit Rescue, the Sea Cadets, Scarborough Survivors and Foundation, which supports homeless teenagers.
Then there’s the wildlife – work a lot of practices quietly turn away, and we don’t.
Lauren trained with British Divers Marine Life Rescue so she can attend the seals that wash up along our stretch of coast, usually checking them over free of charge.
When a deer is hit on the road on a bank holiday and the wildlife charities ring round every practice in the area, the answer is usually no – until they ring Filey..
As far as Lauren is concerned, she took an oath to care for animals, and that didn’t come with small print.
Injured birds are treated free, and when the rescues are full, hedgehogs get rehabbed in the practice itself.
Speaking of birds: if you find a fledgling this spring and it isn’t hurt, leave it where it is. The parents are usually watching nearby – and every year, perfectly healthy young birds get scooped up by well-meaning people and end up needing hand-rearing they never needed at all. We’re always happy to give advice, so please get in touch if you’re unsure about anything.
You’ll find us out and about too, from careers talks at Filey Junior School to helping sixth formers in Scarborough prepare for vet school interviews and applications.
And if you’re one of the many families who holiday in Filey each year – your pets are welcome here too.
